Call of Duty 4 AI and Difficulty Levels
Christopher Pilkington discusses spawn points in Call of Duty 4, notably how it affects the AI and balancing of the game.
The discussion in the comments is also interesting as it mentions heatmap statistics for deaths in Half-Life 2 Episode 2 to give an idea of how the AI games could be better balanced. This is a great way to provide feedback for level designers!

A History of Mad Doc
The Andover Townsman has an article about Mad Doc Software, a company founded by Dr. Ian Lane Davis which provides AI services and middleware. The article looks into the history of the company and some of its recent projects.
“Though video games have evolved tremendously from his days as an Andover middle school student, Davis believes the ‘next big break through’ for the industry will actually harken back to the days when video games were graphically primitive, but much more interactive.”
On Lisp and Bottom-Up Development
The Learning Lisp blog has a post about Paul Graham’s book on Lisp, looking into the most interesting concepts that you can get from this powerful language.
You can also download a digital version of the book freely. I’d consider this required reading for anyone serious about AI. All the ideas of building a modular language from the bottom-up are extremely applicable for building extensible and maintainable game AI.
Moving into Artificial Intelligence for Games
The Edmonton Journal has an article about the industry in Vancouver, and particularly about developer Scott McGillivray, who wants to get into AI:
“I want to get more into the artificial intelligence of the game, the computer opponents, for example.”
