Andrew Armstrong on December 24, 2008

Welcome to the 2nd Annual Awards for Game AI, where the best games of the year are nominated and voted by professionals, enthusiasts, and researchers in artificial intelligence for games.

Last week you submitted your nominations, and here are the finalists. You have exactly one week to vote for the best candidates!

Best AI in a Mainstream Game

In alphabetical order:

  • Fallout 3 contains much improved combat and A-Life systems over Oblivion, in a large world and with a huge assortment of monsters, humans and other things the AI works well controlling.

  • Grand Theft Auto 4 shows off ambiant pedestrian AI, ragdoll actors, and improved driving, and enemy combat.

  • Left 4 Dead has the AI able to hold it’s own as a survivor, taking over from idle players even, and zombies who are able to make their way around levels - placed by an “AI Director” controlling the flow of the game.

  • Resistance 2 features a multiplayer mode with AI’s having dynamically assigned objectives to defeat the players.

  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky has an improved A-Life system over the previous title, and tactical territory control the AI is heavily involved in.

We deeply appreciate the nomination and would like to thank the two that voted for us (no, it was not the authors themselves that voted :-). Best regards Stefan and Johan
