What are you expected to know as a game AI programmer working in industry? Which parts of the team will you work with and how can you prepare yourself for dealing with these responsibilities?
These days, there are many topics that you’re expected to know about. Of course, it depends on the size of the team. The bigger the team the more focused your work will be. For instance, I’ve been involved both as the only AI programmer on a project in a very central role, but also as a more independent developer working with a handful of people.
See the video below for the details… This Q&A was recorded live on October 7th 2008.
Obviously, I’m rather biased towards game AI generally, so I would be likely to see that role as very central to the whole game development process! But keep in mind that making good non-player characters does involve many disciplines — regardless of who does the work.
If you have any questions or comments about the typical responsibilities and expectations of AI programmers, feel free to post them below in a comment or in the forums.
